Ah yes, the “It’s not bad” comment. That is also very popular with Dad Windu’s family. I used to hear that one more often but I *cough* slightly freaked out one night (can I blame my hot-headed Irish background?) about what a backhanded comment it was and it has been used less often since then.

The next time I hear it though, I am going to follow your example and throw a couple of my own comments in for good measure.

In Roo’s family, apparently the highest complement that could be given is ‘It’s not bad.’ Said in a quiet, slightly incredulous tone. So when Roo came to live with me, that’s what I had to work with. I think it’s the British understatement thing – because I can attest that the food served in Roo’s home was very, very good. (the food served here, otoh, is a lot more hit & miss. So sometimes there’s an onimous silence in lieu of the ‘it’s not bad’) It has of course become an ongoing joke now as I tack on commentary to it – yeah, it’s amazing! I’m actually not gagging! This doesn’t make me vomit!

I have taught him to say “wow, this is good” but that is said with such a tone of disbelief and shock that it also makes everyone laugh…..
