I have a heart-felt Thank You for each of you for taking the time to comment on this post. Every comment has made me feel a little less hopeless about the topic. I avoided returning to it earlier because it just really chaps my hide to know that there’s still so much discrimination in a country that has taken such a big stride forward. I think DJ hit the nail on the head – in time, in time. Two steps forward, 1 step back.

Coincidentally, my daughter and I watched the movie, The Rosa Parks Story, on election morning. At the time, I intended it as a jumping-off point for discussion about the nature of racism and the progress made by African-Americans since that time; now you’ve got me thinking about the movie’s relationship to these hideous “marriage protection” amendments. It really is about the “back of the bus,” isn’t it?

Sorry to say Florida passed the similar Prop 2 here. It’s strange that our states can vote yes to Obama but no to this. Perhaps in time.

AZ, too, sadly, though in our case it was just making a law on the books a part of the constitution. AZ is so frustrating right now — it’s starting to move left a bit, but oh so slowly. A DEM gov, now a congressional delegation that is mostly DEM. And then crud like this. GAH. All around, what was mostly a beautiful election was marred by a serious setback for LGBT rights.

Agreed, OMK, it’s very disappointing. Speaking as a Cali resident and someone who voted against 8, I’m unhappy but not entirely surprised. The numbers have been looking bad for the last month or so.
