Things Worth Remembering

The three habits that lead to success are: Patience, Application, and Vision.

Take care: The person who will tell others' faults to you - will tell yours to others.

It is always better to be underestimated.

There are three things that are better than riches: Health, Freedom, and Honor.

Think swiftly, speak softly, act wisely.

"The world is neither Scottish, English, nor Irish, neither French, Dutch, nor Chinese, but human, and each nation is only the partial development of a universal humanity." - James Grant on founding the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights, 1862

Because he enjoys music so much, I have for the past several years encouraged Padawan Learner to consider taking music lessons, but he was never interested in learning an instrument and only liked singing for recreation. So I backed off. I’m so glad I did, too, because he decided to take piano lessons last fall and is doing very well at it. Best of all, he really enjoys playing the piano and always looks forward to his lesson every Friday morning. There’s no nagging, no drudgery, and no avoidance.

Here’s his second piano recital, from yesterday afternoon. He was so calm and collected in front of everyone! He said he gets really relaxed when he’s nervous, how nice is that? He must have been terrified then, because he didn’t show it at all. (Sorry about the poor image, it was like a cave inside the building!)

How proud you must be! Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed that. Nothing warms my heart more than children and music. I can tell by his playing he has a passion for it, congrats to him!

  • Good job! He’s doing very well.

And you’re so right not to push. Make information and resources available then let them make their own decisions.

The results can truly be amazing.

  • Wow…that’s incredible for less than a year of lessons! Uber started just about six months ago, but definitely doesn’t have quite this passion yet. btw, what a beautiful song!

He plays beautifully, and I applaud your decision not to force the issue.

He did VERY well and I agree that it’s a lovely piece. I’m really impressed with his progress–it’s hard to believe that he just started!
    PS The boys say “hi”!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ACK! It won’t open.. Dang slow internet. I will have to take the laptop to starbucks with me later.. I want to see it NOW!

  • He is really doing a good job and exceptionally well for just a short time in lessons. I love it when kids find what they want to do and then DO IT! Fantastic!

  • Good to hear – we’re just starting the whole piano lesson saga with the boys… It’s so much better when it’s their choice, isn’t it?? Lol.
