ScoutMom: I had much the same thought as I read it. It's easy to romanticize long ago periods, but even the Little House books speak vividly about the harshness of life 100+ years ago (The Long Winter, for example). We readers selectively remember the "running through the ripening wheat" parts and selectively push aside the "going blind from lack of antibiotics" parts.

This was really fascinating - thanks for sharing it! I used to get Mr. Krampf's emails but stopped awhile ago for some reason that I've since forgotten (information overload, most likely). I'd forgotten all about it, and now I'm thinking about re-subscribing.

But can you imagine someone deciding to kidnap your child and put them into an orphanage without your knowledge or consent? Yikes! This is, I think, especially good reading for some of those folks who pine for the "good old days". They were not quite so Laura-and-Mary as people would like to believe, I'm afraid.

I got it too, but unlike Ami it didn't cross my mind to email Mr. Krampf. This is why Ami has more friends than I do -- she remembers the magic words like "thank you".

It is indeed a fascinating piece. I was thinking about it all day.

I got that this morning, too. I emailed Mr Krampf to thank him for it.
What a wonderful tribute to his grandmother to devote his whole newsletter to her memoir!
