Leia: “They’re getting closer.”
Han Solo: ”Oh, yeah? Watch this.” [Han throws a lever, only to have the engine sputter and die.]
Leia: “Watch what?”
Han Solo: ”I think we’re in trouble.”
C-3PO: “If I may say so, sir, I noticed earlier the hyperdrive motivator has been damaged. It’s impossible to go to lightspeed.”
Han Solo: ”We’re in trouble.”
Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back
It’s that time of year again. Time to realize that a large portion of our summer’s Big Plans just didn’t fan out.
- I didn’t have a girls-only camping trip – not when your camping buddy’s mom gets her leg amputated the day before you’re supposed to head out.
- We didn’t get the garage painted before September – waiting on replacement parts for our custom cut siding. And for the record, who puts custom cut siding on a frickin garage?
- Padawan Learner didn’t get his science and logic books finished (from last year’s program) – despite being perpetually “almost done”. (He’ll finish them today, under my watchful eye.)
- Dad Windu still doesn’t know the long-term status with his job – he’s been on the one week at a time plan since mid-March.
- I didn’t pick up a single Dutch book all summer long.
- My yard is still full of weeds and the flower beds aren’t cleared out completely either.
- We didn’t make it out to BC or CA to visit friends and family – and it looks unlikely for fall as well.
- We got one, single, minuscule tomato to ripen – thanks to a cold, wet non-summer.
What didn’t you get done?

I didn’t get all sorts of things done. I will do a few today. And tomorrow. And the next day.
I’m trying to remember the name of the book I read this in, but it’s early and I’m tired.
“There is much to do. And there’ll be as much tomorrow. And when I die, there will be work left undone.”
That’s me.
My tomatoes were also singularly unsuccessful, as were most of my garden plants. The ones James planted worked out. As they always seem to. I may put him in charge of the garden.
I didn’t get anything spectacular done for DH birthday. Done, but not noteworthy.
I didn’t get to the pool often. Honestly, I got to the pool once and realized that the public pool was way to busy for me to be confortable that DS wouldn’t drown. We’re going this week, weekly through the winter (indoors), now that everyone’s back to school.
I could write pages and pages about what we didn’t get done. The sewing lessons for a friend’s daughters along with my 9yo? Never happened. The work on a solo dress for 13yo for Irish Dance? Not touched. The math the kids planned to do all summer? Nope. The trips to the pool? Too cold.
And the list goes on and on.
But I get to blame a lot of this non-accomplishment on the kitchen remodeling. It’s nice to blame someone else for our inertia.
It’s nice to hear about other’s “not done” lists. Getting a visual list also did the trick of getting me moving on cleaning up around the garage (paint chips everywhere) and weeding a few of the flower beds. Now… off to the resale shops to find a few shirts for PL. Pants will have to be custom ordered – 27″ waist, 32″ inseam. Not exactly a standard size.
There are lots of things I didn’t get done. but I’d have to say that the mostly weeds and some potatoes garden is the biggest failure of the summer.
Any ideas on how to kill these weeds so we won’t have them back next summer? I don’t want to just till them but I don’t want to have to pull them all by hand either – there are spikes on those things!
I didn’t get my pictures hung.. The boys and I wanted to hit Nagaski and we just didn’t get time.
And, the laundry is still not done.
Well, I DID get moved to Korea. Um… But I didn’t… um…
Oh, I know. I didn’t get as much writing done as I hoped.
Because I was reading blogs.
I decided to do a very small garden this year. Then my tomatoes died and early death (turned out to be blight). I was upset until I realized how cold and wet our summer was turning out. Then I was grateful that I didn’t have struggling tomatoes to try to nurse along for the summer. I just waved at the
weedscover crop as it thrived.Uhm… I didn’t read any of the books I wanted to. My son didn’t read any of the books I wanted him to. My daughter at least started reading one of the books I wanted her to.
I didn’t clean out the file cabinet or the closet in my daughter’s room (it’s all filled with my stuff still).
Meh, I don’t like writing down the things I didn’t do.
Take your list…put X2 beside it, and you would basically have mine. Weeds and flower beds are my biggest regret right now. I MUST get out in my yard this week!!!!
The list of what didn’t get done is sooooo long it doesn’t merit mentioning. On the other hand I did make time to read some good books and drink lemonade in the backyard. Priorities.
I didn’t get my garden going. I didn’t get all the sewing done. I didn’t make it to the water park with my kiddo often enough. We didn’t go to the zoo at all, not to mention the botanical gardens, the art museum, and the science museum. You read that right — I didn’t take my kiddo to a single museum this summer. I certainly didn’t exercise or eat right.
What I did do: watched movies with my kiddo. Traveled to the beach. Learned to live with my mother-in-law. Laughed. Cried. Enjoyed doing what I did manage to get done.
