Just so we’re all on the same page. Here are the basic rules for sleeping anywhere in my general vicinity when I am experiencing a migraine.

No snoring

No rolling over in bed

No moving around of any kind in bed

No sniffing

No sneezing

No coughing - are you trying to kill me?

No flipping the pillow over

No flapping the sheets

No open mouth breathing

No cute little sounds on the exhale – pff, pff, pff

No breathing

Your obliviousness to my pain-induced insomnia is ticking me off.

Luke: ”I understand. R2, fire up the converters.”
Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back

I wish I could. I would love to interfere. I would interfere in a heartbeat if I could, but this scourge is out of my hands. For three days now Padawan Learner has struggled with migraines. I can’t remember the last time that he’s had so many in such close proximity to each other.

Thursday afternoon, a whopper hit after lunch, and he spent the rest of the afternoon in bed with the blinds pulled. He felt better after sleeping until dinner and was able to play quietly with the neighbor for a few hours before going to bed.

I got hit late yesterday afternoon but was able to sleep it off – mostly. As I was sewing up the hem on PL’s Neo cloak around 8 p.m., he staggered up to his room early with a real rager: pale skin, rolling stomach, trembling hands, light-sensitive eyes, the whole schebang.

Unfortunately, the usual “sleep it off” method didn’t seem to help because he woke up worse than ever this morning. He couldn’t get out of bed for several hours. All light, noise and motion brought the pounding up to full force. Eventually, I made him get up and try to eat a piece of toast, as that sometimes helps with the nausea. It did help, but light, noise, motion and being upright were still a big problem so it was into the basement (where it’s cooler than his loft bed) for another nap. Eventually he couldn’t sleep anymore and felt somewhat better so long as he stayed still. So he’s spent the day watching movies, playing Mancala and Connect 4 with me, reading and discussing one of my favorite movies from teendom, Sixteen Candles. (Yes, I know. I’m a bad, bad mom. I let a 13 boy watch a movie with underage drinking, sexual references, swearing and brief nudity. PS – He thought Anthony Michael Hall was absolutely hysterical.) He’s now watching the Star Trek movie, Nemesis, and enjoying it very much.

A little while ago, I asked him to try on his Neo cloak after I got the first halves of the four frog closures I’m using sewn on, and he just about fell over in pain. Although he’s been after me all week to get this done, he very quietly asked, “Is it OK if you wait until tomorrow to finish that?”

I guess that migraine is still hanging out in there. Send good thoughts towards my boy. He needs them.
